The card
One card, in place of the password.
The IoT SAFE Smartcard carries the same hardware-rooted security model as the applet into a format a person can carry. It fits a wallet, it works contact and contactless, and it replaces the username-and-password login rather than adding a step to it.

Why a specification like IoT SAFE is essential
What it adds
IoT SAFE provides a secure form of two-factor authentication: it adds encryption with IoT SAFE keys, plus a physical IoT SAFE token, to the usual username-and-password login.
What it removes
Both options eliminate the standard username-and-password login, which is not the most secure. Two-factor authentication stops typical attack patterns — man-in-the-middle and phishing — from succeeding and taking over the account.
